Is Goodberry Good in Out of the Abyss
Shattered Realms TTRPG is a system built to work with Dungeon's and Dragons 5th edition 2014. We've built our system to be the power level of the players handbook so that modules can be run without much effort. Enjoy the article below!
Many players often believe that Goodberry serves as an excellent solution for circumventing the challenges posed by resource scarcity in Out of the Abyss. However, we’ll explore reasons that may lead you to reconsider this option.
Why Goodberry
Isn’t Overpowered in
Out of the Abyss
Goodberry is often a reliable healing and survival spell in many campaigns, but in the dangerous and resource-strapped world of Out of the Abyss , it is far less powerful. Here’s why Dungeon Masters can keep the tension high without fearing Goodberry trivializing survival.
1. Limited Duration & Frequent Casting
Each casting of Goodberry sustains nourishment for only one day, forcing casters to use the spell repeatedly to keep the party fed and healed. However, spell slots are precious in the Underdark, where frequent combat and environmental hazards limit how often casters can safely expend resources. This balance means relying on Goodberry daily is rarely sustainable.
2. Minimal Healing Output
Though each berry heals 1 HP, this is often insufficient against the dangerous wounds inflicted by creatures and hazards in the Underdark. In larger parties or after heavy encounters, the healing provided by Goodberry quickly becomes supplemental rather than the primary source of recovery.
3. No Cure for Madness, Poison, or Disease
Goodberry offers no protection against or cure for common Underdark afflictions such as madness, poison, and disease. Players must therefore rely on other spells like Lesser Restoration, potions, or abilities to manage these persistent threats, making Goodberry insufficient on its own for survival.
4. Tactical Constraints on Rest and Recovery
Extended rests, which are necessary to regain spell slots for casting Goodberry, are rare and risky in the Underdark. Players often prioritize stealth, evasion, and survival tactics over prolonged rest periods, reducing the opportunities to depend on this spell for nourishment and healing.
5. Why Rations Matter More Than Goodberry
Material components. The material component for Goodberry is mistletoe. Because the book does not give you an arcane focus until chapter 10, you'd have to randomly find a sprig of mistletoe in the underdark. A DM who is running a survival campaign will catch on very quickly and simply not offer it until mid game.
Rations provide sustained nutrition essential for long-term survival, whereas Goodberry only provides nourishment for a single day and requires daily casting to maintain. Carrying rations forces players to make meaningful choices about supplies, inventory space, and survival strategy, which enriches gameplay and roleplay. Additionally, in a campaign with limited spell resources, Goodberry consumes valuable spell slots needed for combat and other survival needs, making it an unsustainable substitute for food. Finally, rations encourage party cooperation, planning, and tension over scarce resource sharing, core themes of the Underdark experience that Goodberry alone cannot replace.
Summary
While Goodberry provides valuable minor healing and sustenance, its limitations in Out of the Abyss preserve the campaign’s tense atmosphere and harsh survival challenges, ensuring it doesn’t trivialize the constant dangers of the Underdark. Enjoy your adventures in Menzoberranzan.
